School let out for the last time right before Katrina in 2005 for the kids, but in 2009 is when it finally succumbed to the most vicious force it has ever faced. The Plaquemines School Board. It wouldn’t be destroyed by storms but by the very people that were bound to protect it. It was the most historic building in the lower end of the Parish yet due to a few administrative officials in particular it lies in a crumbled pile full of broken promises and lies from a governing board that does not have the people’s interest in mind. For whatever reason it ultimately was decided the school will not be allowed to stand regardless of the FEMA studies that gave it a clear bill of health to be restored and returned to its former self. Anyone involved with the School board or its affiliated branches should be completely and utterly ashamed at what they have done to our community and the people therein. Due to their incompetence a once proud town that we still call home is doomed to be part of the consolidated school system the School board longed for all these years. In 19990 when I was graduating there was talk of a consolidated school putting Boothville, Buras and Port Sulphur together as one big happy family. Apparently bigger schools get more money from the state or something, who knows, but It is a terrible idea from the onset. No matter where they put the school someone gets screwed. If they put it in Port Sulphur the kids from Boothville have to be bussed halfway up the Parish to school. Port Sulphur gets the school, their economy flourishes due to the increase in population because the school is there. Same story anywhere you put it. If you are thinking Buras would be the logical choice, just think of the poor kids that live in Point Celeste having to come all the way to Buras every day to school.
Port Sulphur AND Buras needed a school. Boothville is suitable to be a K-Jr High school but we ALL need our schools for community identity and pride. Our school could have been refurbished and been better than ever even if the elementary wing was leveled and the high school side opened. It would have been plenty big enough for our present population, which would have come up if we had a school.
I am proud of the turnout for the tailgate party the other day as one final show of support and community spirit for the old school that has taught so many of us how to be productive citizens. I met my wife in this school, and I would have liked our children to go to this school. It was a small school but a proud school. It didn’t deserve to go down like this. Nor did we.

Chad

I’m sure it didn’t go off without a hitch but I couldn’t tell.
There were so many people it was unreal. The entire grounds of the fort inside the levee was full of parked cars. I was promised a copy of a picture from a helicopter with an overall view of the event and when I get it I will post it. I also am supposed to be told how many people actually showed up.
The way this thing is growing every year I wouldn’t be surprised if there are
100 teams next year.

One of my friends (Reliable at that) told me the other fire departments want a piece of the action too and would like to have one big festival and naturally have it in Belle Chasse.
So, basically we have a good thing down here and they want it up there. If I recall correctly they had a crawfish festival in Belle Chasse a few years ago and it was a failure. They need to stick to their Seafood Festival and call it good. Leave this here where it belongs.

Lets see if they actually put another one back. The fire trucks are sitting in the Delta parking lot in the mean time.
This picture was actually from March 12. The building is completely gone as of the 13’th.

Still not sure if there is water in it. The water pressure is somewhat steady now though.
